Typically, in a northern climate like Quebec, it is advisable to visit beehives in February and weigh them to assess whether the colony has consumed a significant portion of its fall reserves. If the hive feels light, it's likely that the bees do not have enough food to survive until spring. The fondant sugar paste becomes the ideal solution because, by consuming it, the bees absorb carbohydrates for an immediate energy boost. The goal is to support the hive until spring arrives and natural resources become available.
Directions :
- Temporarily remove the insulation from the top of the hive.
- Remove the roof and lift the inner-cover.
- Place the fondant carefully on the frames above the cluster.
- Close the hive and reinsert the insulation.
- Repeat, or better yet, place 2 patties at once.
* To conserve moisture, close package when not in use.
