Generally, in a northern climate like Quebec, hives should be inspected in February and weighed to assess whether the colony has depleted much of its reserves from the previous autumn. If the hive feels light, the bees likely don't have enough food to survive until spring. Fondant-type paste food becomes the ideal solution because the bees, by eating it, will absorb the carbohydrates for a direct energy boost. The goal is to sustain the hive until spring arrives and natural resources become available. Apply two patties at a time to a populous hive until the first pollen appears. Keep the product refrigerated during storage.
